Printing a Photo on a T-Shirt in Hamburg: How to Make Your Photo Gift Look Great
Share
A photo on a T-shirt or hoodie is one of the most personal gifts you can give. The family dog, a first scan of the baby, your favourite holiday snap or your child's drawing – on fabric it becomes something people actually wear, instead of something that ends up in a drawer.
To make sure the result looks the way you imagined, a few details matter. Here are our most useful tips from the studio in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel – from choosing the right photo to getting the size right.
Which photos work for textile printing?
Not every beautiful photo makes a good print. Look for these things:
- Sharp and well lit: A daylight photo almost always looks better on fabric than a dark phone shot taken in the evening. Anything slightly blurry on your phone will look properly blurry when it is printed large across a chest.
- A clear subject: One face, one pet, one person – easy to recognise and not too small in the frame. A group photo of ten people works better on the back than as a small chest print.
- Enough contrast: Subjects that stand out clearly from the background print more crisply. Very pale or very dark photos lose detail on fabric.
How to prepare your photo
These steps get the most out of your picture:
- Use the original file. Photos sent through WhatsApp or other messengers are often heavily compressed. Ask for the picture straight from the camera roll, as an email attachment or via a cloud link. Screenshots are a last resort too.
- Check the resolution. In our online designer we recommend at least 1000 × 1000 pixels. The bigger the print, the more pixels you need. If the image is too small, the preview will warn you.
- Crop it. Think about what really belongs on the shirt. A tight crop of your dog's face usually has more impact than the whole photo with the sofa and the living room.
- Remove the background if it suits the photo. A cut-out subject without a rectangular frame usually looks more polished on fabric. The designer points you to tools such as remove.bg that do this in seconds. Save the result as a PNG with a transparent background.
- Check the preview. The designer shows the print size in centimetres. Hold a ruler against your chest to compare – it gives you a real sense of how big the design will look.
Our team checks every design before printing. If something is technically off, we get in touch with you before anything is printed.
Light or dark garment – which suits your photo?
We print using DTF. On dark fabrics a white base layer goes underneath the design so the colours stay strong. Even so, the combination is worth a thought:
- Dark photo on a black hoodie: Black and very dark areas of the image visually merge with the fabric. Choose a brighter photo or a lighter garment colour.
- Light photo on a white shirt: White edges, a pale sky or snow almost disappear on white. A cut-out subject or a coloured shirt helps.
- Colourful photos: Look especially natural on white, off-white or grey.
- Black-and-white photos: Often look really classy on coloured garments such as sage, soft rose or navy.
Our tip: try two or three colours in the designer before you decide. The preview shows you straight away how your photo looks.
Getting the size right without asking
With gifts, the size is often the biggest question mark. Here's how to find it out discreetly:
- Lay one of the person's favourite T-shirts or hoodies flat and measure the chest width and length. Compare the numbers with the size chart in the product images.
- Our adult T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts are unisex cuts. If they like a looser fit, go one size up or pick the oversized T-shirt or oversized hoodie.
- For children, leave a little room – they grow faster than you think.
Placement: chest, back or sleeve?
Depending on the product, you can print on the front, the back, the left chest or the sleeve – or combine several. A few ideas:
- A large photo on the front for the biggest wow effect.
- A small photo on the left chest with a name or a date on the back – subtle but still personal.
- A date or initials on the sleeve as a small detail people only notice at second glance.
Not just T-shirts: photo gifts for the whole family
Your photo fits on much more than a shirt. Popular at Christmas:
- Custom Regular Fit Hoodie – heavy 280 g/m² fabric with a soft brushed inside, perfect for the cold months.
- Custom Regular Fit T-Shirt – the classic for family photos, pets and in-jokes.
- Custom Baby Bodysuit – with a photo of big brother, big sister or the grandparents, it's a gift that gets shown off at every family gathering.
- Custom Cushion Cover – your favourite photo for the sofa.
